Gender Leadership And Womens Leadership Styles - 5681 Words

There are many nonprofits that have come into existence because of the shift of the economy. While women workers currently make up almost seventy-five percent, men are disproportionately in leadership roles with women only making up twenty-one percent of leadership. Gender roles in leadership are constructed and reinforced with power being connected to the male leaders. While there is a lot of research on female leaders and how their leadership styles are different than their male counterparts there in not much research out there about authentic female leaders in nonprofits. More like ly, few women have made it to the top.† (Appelbaum, Audet, and Miller, 2003 p. 43). A recent study by the Women’s College of the University of Denver and The White House Project are hypothesizing that it will be 2085 before women reach equality with men. â€Å"While nonprofits that have budgets of 25 million dollars a year, have staffs that are approximately 75% women they only have about 21% of leadership roles† (Study Highlights the Current State of Women in Leadership.) Gender roles in leadership are constructed and reinforced with power being connected to the males. â€Å"Therefore social organizations serve as sites in which gendered power relations can be either subverted or maintained.† (Vasavada, 2012). Women have demonstrated promoting the welfare of others for centuries. The purpose of a nonprofit includes working to benefit society as a whole. The ability to meet this purpose solely relies on the leadership of the nonprofits. The leaders’ choice of leadership style and the authenticity of executing it will determine if your employees embrace your decisions or just merely go with the flow to keep their positions.
